Benefits from Surah Al-Kahf Verse 28 – Shaykh Dr. Abdullāh Adh-Dhafirī (حفظه الله)

Allāh, the Exalted and Most High, says:

“And keep yourself (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) patiently with those who call on their Lord (i.e. your companions who remember their Lord with glorification, praising in prayers, and other righteous deeds) morning and afternoon, seeking His Face; and let not your eyes overlook them, desiring the pomp and glitter of the life of the world; and obey not him whose heart We have made heedless of Our Remembrance, and who follows his own lusts, and whose affair (deeds) has been lost.”

[Sūrah Al-Kahf: 28]

The benefits in the verse include:

  1. The obligation of patience — and patience is of three types:
    • Patience in obeying Allāh.
    • Patience regarding the Decrees of Allāh.
    • Patience upon harm encountered in the path of Allāh.
  2. The virtue of keeping the company of the people of good conduct (and righteousness), uprightness, worship (‘Ibādah), and the company of the people of the Sunnah.
  3. The virtue of the acts of worship and encouragement towards that.
  4. That the people of ‘Ibādah (worship) and obedience are the best of the people.
  5. Supplication (Du’ā) is divided into two categories:
    • Supplication of worship.
    • Supplication of asking.
  6. The obligation of having sincerity to Allāh alone in worship and seeking only His Face by way of it.
  7. It is not appropriate for the believer to turn attention towards the adornment of this worldly life.
  8. The insignificance of this world and that it is not worth it for a Muslim to attach his heart to it.
  9. A caution against people who are heedless and negligent, and against obeying them.
  10. The prohibition of following lusts (vain desires) and its danger to the religion of the Muslim and his hereafter.
  11. That the affairs of the one who follows and obeys his lusts (vain desires) end up in futility — meaning loss in both worldly the hereafter.
