Attending or Watching Football Matches that Involve Prizes or Rewards is Haram (Prohibited) – The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta

Fatwa No. 20249:

Football matches that involve monetary prizes or similar rewards are haram (prohibited), because that is considered gambling (qimār). This is due to the fact that it is not permissible to take prize/award (as-sabaq) except in what the Shariah has permitted, and that is: competition on horses, camels, and in archery.

Based on this, attending these matches (that involve prizes/rewards) is prohibited (haram), and watching them is also haram for the one who knows that they are for a prize, because his attendance is an approval of it.

However, if the match does not involve a prize or reward, does not distract from what Allāh has made obligatory such as solāt (prayer) and other obligations, and does not include any prohibited matters, such as exposing the ‘awrah (parts of the body that must be covered), free mixing of men and women, or the presence of musical instruments — then there is no sin in it, nor in watching it.

And Allāh is the One who grant success. May Allāh extol our Prophet Muhammad, and his family and companions, and grant them peace.

ج ٢: مباريات كرة القدم التي على مال أو نحوه من جوائز حرام؛ لكون ذلك قماراً؛ لأنه لا يجوز أخذ السبق وهو العوض إلا فيما أذن فيه الشرع، وهو المسابقة على الخيل والإبل والرماية، وعلى هذا فحضور المباريات حرام ومشاهدتها كذلك، لمن علم أنها على عوض؛ لأن في حضوره لها إقراراً لها.ـ

أما إذا كانت المباراة على غير عوض ولم تشغل عما أوجب الله من الصلاة وغيرها، ولم تشتمل على محظور؛ ككشف العورات، أو اختلاط النساء بالرجال، أو وجود آلات لهو – فلا حرج فيها ولا في مشاهدتها.ـ
