The Days of the Rites of Hajj are Seven
Al-’Imām Muhyiddīn Ibn Sharaf An-Nawawī (d. 676H) said:
The Days of the Rites of Hajj are Seven. The first of these days begins after the sun passes its zenith on the 7th of Dhū al-Ḥijjah, and the last of these days ends after the sun passes its zenith on the 13th of Dhū al-Ḥijjah, which is the last of the Days of at-Tashrīq.
- The 7th day has no specific name.
- The 8th day is called Yawm at-Tarwiyah [the Day of Watering], as mentioned previously.
- The 9th day is Yawm ‘Arafah [the Day of ‘Arafah].
- The 10th day is Yawm an-Naḥr [the Day of Sacrifice].
- The 11th day is Yawm al-Qarr [the Day of Resting] – read with fatḥ on the qāf and shaddah on the rā’ – it is called so because they settled in Minā on this day, or they stay in peace and tranquility.
- The 12th day is (called) Yawm an-Nafr al-Awwal [the First Day of Departure], and the 13th day is Yawm an-Nafr ath-Thānī [the Second Day of Departure].
As for the statement of al-Ṣaymarī, al-Māwardī, and the author of al-Bayān: that people differed regarding the naming of the 8th day as Yawm at-Tarwiyah. It was said because they stock up water, as we mentioned. It was also said: because Ādam met Ḥawwā’ on that day. And it was said that because Jibrīl showed Ibrāhīm the rites of Hajj on that day. This is a corrupt speech and a strange narration. The correct view is what we stated earlier.
